Animal exhibit regulations in Wales. Make your opinion heard

The Welsh Government is currently consulting on new Regulations regarding Animal Exhibits, including the proposal that anyone exhibiting an animal in Wales will need to be licensed and inspected. This will not only apply to those who live in Wales, but any exhibitor who shows dogs at any Welsh show. The Regulations will also require anyone who lives in Wales and exclusively exhibits their dogs outside of Wales to also obtain a licence and be inspected….”

If the bill goes through without any amendments a price of approx £350 has been suggested for a licence to show per owner 😞. Can you imagine having to pay £350 on top of the ridiculous entry fees we already pay?

It’s fast becoming a rich man’s game as it is. It will be the death of showing horses, cats, dogs, birds etc in Wales, and to anyone from Wales wanting to show in the rest of the UK. The consequences are almost incomprehensible – it would almost certainly signify the end of showing as we know it in the UK .

The apathy regarding signing the online petition is so frustrating

Think how many people currently show pet animals in Wales? Yet currently there is less than 3,000 signatures. If we are not careful it’ll be like the final of X.Factor with the favourite losing because people thought it was a sure thing and didn’t bother voting! Then they will be the ones screaming and shouting… but by then it’ll be too late.

Please sign and ask your friends and family to sign, it takes seconds to show your support for those of us who love travelling our beautiful countryside to show our lovely dogs at weekends.

The WSCC Working Assessment Tests for Any Variety Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club (WSSC) held their Autumn Working Assessment Tests on Saturday 21st Sept at Hall Farm, Abbots Ripton, near Huntingdon by kind permission of John Fellowes, 4th Lord de Ramsey with judges: Mr Roy Ellershaw [2766] (N&O) & Mrs Jane Sutherland (N&O).

It was a really hot day so I am sure that the dogs appreciated the fact that much of the day was in shady woods but that there were also water retrieves for each test.

The results are as follows (dogs WSSs unless specified):

Novice – 1. & BH River Bank Bremner (Clumber) handled by Robert Lawson, 2. Kingsknoll Hercules (Clumber) handled by Tim Poole, 3. Ruelowhills Zeus (Clumber) handled by Kevan Hawkes, 4 Seolfre Bombay Saphire handled by Gary Barstow, COM. Kingsknoll Sebastian (Clumber) handled by Julie Poole.

“Another brilliant day with the Worcestershire Gundog Society at the annual Fun Scurry Day which was held at The Lenches Lakes near Evesham last Sunday.”

A good turnout of members and non-members saw a wide range of breeds from the Spaniel, Retriever and HPR groups take part in one or more of the 5 scurries on offer throughout the day.

Everyone had plenty of laughs, which is what the day is all about, mums, dads all the kids (and one or two of the grandparents) were all to be seen giving it a go,along with a little semi-serious competition amongst one or two more experienced handlers.

It was a pleasure to welcome visitors from the Vale & West Gundog Club getting stuck in trying to beat each others times, all in good humour, I believe “Beetle” eventually won bragging rights in the end.

The Sun shone all day in the picture perfect blue sky and everyone went home with a smile on their faces and some very tired dogs.

Well done to one and all who came along and took part thank you for supporting the Club and we hope to see you again next year, tell your friends and maybe drag them along too?

Ivan, Galaxy and new baby Devlin are stars all round the UK

We have had a fabulous few weeks showing so far.

Firstly, we attended Scottish Kennel Club Championship show on August 24 with Ivan, Galaxy and our new baby Devlin, who all did us proud yet again in the ring. Ivan – BIS/BPIS/RBPIS Russian Roulette de Lunartico ShCM took VHC in a lovely limit dog class, Galaxy – BIS/RBISS/RBIS Int/Mulit Ch Icewolf Strike a Pose de Lunartico ShCM/Esg16’17/Csg17/TAN/WPD took VHC in a superb open female class, and Dev’s took 1st in puppy dog and 2nd in junior dog. then just the following day Devlin wins Best in Show at Felinfach Show.

On September 7th we attended Richmond Championship show and again our kids did us proud. Devlin took 1st place in minor puppy dog and 1st in puppy dog and overall best male puppy. Galaxy won the biggest class of the day, open female, and went on to win the Reserve Challenge Certificate, gaining her KC Stud Book number and lifetime Crufts qualification.

Then a week later we headed back up north, this time to Darlington Championship show, with Devlin again winning 1st place in minor puppy dog and 1st in puppy dog and overall best male puppy. Galaxy was flawless all day and gained a very respectable reserve in the biggest and strongest class of the day again, the open bitch class. It has been a tiring few weeks, but lovely to be back on the road, having fun and success with the team, and catching up with some old friends.

The next few months are also going to be busy for us with many shows already booked.

Arfon Working Gundog Club Retriever Test 17th August 2019

The Arfon Working Gundog Club held a A V Retriever Test at Bodrida Farm, Brynsiencyn, Anglesey on the 17th August 2019 by kind permission of the Rogers family. The judges were Mr Phil Smithies, Mr Peter Thompson and Scott Marland.

The weather was sunny and windy with the wind strengthening as the day went on.

I would like to thank our hosts, the judges,and the helpers and dummy throwers for helping make the day a success, also to our sponsors CSJ Specialist Canine Feeds and Gary McCarthy of Gundog Gear. Thanks to the competitors for supporting us and congratulations to all in the awards.

Calverhall Family Day – – Fun Dog Show

Hello

On behalf of the Calverhall Family Day Committee, I’d like to say a “Big Thank You” for your support of this year’s Calverhall Family Day – Fun Dog Show.

We had an excellent day. The weather was kind, with only a couple of sharp showers during the afternoon. We had a just over 60 entrants spread across 10 classes, with lots of them entering several classes.

Our judge for the show was Christine – she shows Saluki’s and loves Hounds. She was excellent, spending time with each dog and their owners and encouraging the children that entered. She said the hardest class to judge was the ‘Dog the Judge would most like to take home’..! She picked a beautiful greyhound called ‘Jimmy’ who went on to receive the Reserve Best in Show, much to his owners surprise. Best in Show went to, a beautiful working cocker called ‘Jinny’, owned by Guy Frankfort (who also scooped BiS at last year’s show..!)..

So, THANK YOU and we hope you will consider supporting the show again next year.

Tactics and strategy are playing a much bigger part at the top level of the sport

Where has the summer gone? I recall a few really hot days with the dogs either competing, out for walks or just lounging about in the garden, but July at the European Open with the juniors and then with the adult team seems ages ago.

In a weeks time we’ll be in Finland getting ready for the FCI Agility World Championships, the highlight of the year in the international dog agility calendar. With over 40 countries attending it promises to be an amazing competition. I’ll report back on this next month.

Talking about amazing competitions, earlier in the year we had a dog-swap at home (only for competition and training). I’m currently running Karen’s agility dog Rhyme and Karen is training and running Moog. Rhyme’s a great all-round dog to train and compete with – we’ve had a lot of fun. We’ve also had some successes noticeable winning the championship class at Weardale show which qualified us for Crufts 2020. Karen and I are both really pleased with this result and I’m quite proud that Rhyme will the fourth agility dog that I’ve competed with on the famous green carpet.

I’ve also found it really interesting watching how the game is changing at the top level this year; especially in the championship classes. Tactics and strategy are playing a much bigger part at the top level of the sport. So much so that those handlers who are able to change their game plans to deal with pressure, course design and competition definitely have the competitive edge. This has always been the case to some extent, however I’m seeing a noticeable change this year and a need for handlers to learn these skills.

So I had better get my game face sorted for Crufts 2020.

We’re happy to put Jack and Jazzer back on the road to recovery again

Bev Buckenham spoke to our nutrition expert Nicki, who helped advise her on the best feeds for her dogs with gluten and dental issues. The results were outstanding. Here’s what Bev has to say.

“I just wanted to say a huge thanks to the person I spoke to last week. I have been having your foods and treats for about 8 years now. I had dreadful problems finding a dog food which suited my rescue Lurcher. You thought she was gluten intolerant and following your advice I started her on one of your foods and we have had no trouble since.

Jack our Border terrier eats the same as Jazzy the Lurcher, but Jack has just had another dental which means he has had a total of 20 teeth out now. I didn’t think he would be able to eat the big rings of food anymore.

I spoke to a very helpful member of staff who sent me two lots of food which was smaller for him to try. He chooses the old champ. I ordered a bag on Saturday and it has just arrived. I owed you a bid thank you for sorting out Jazzy eight years ago and now I owe you another huge thanks for sorting out Jack….

You have been so helpful and I don’t know what I would have done without you when I got my rescue Lurcher, as everything I gave her was going straight through and she began to look so thin. It was only with your help I got her sorted out.

Now Jack has lost all his teeth, I came to you again as your foods have kept both of them very young, even though they are Jazzy now 10 and a half and Jack 12 and a half. I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else for food.” Thank you very much. Bev
