The Game Fair 2021, Home Countries International Competition, Ragley Hall

By Alan Rees

It was great to be back at the Game Fair, after a two year break, due to the pandemic

It was excellent to meet up with friends, new and old, competing with their dogs; Some dogs, not having competed for two years.

The ground and tests were well thought out with some very technical elements, while conditions were at times challenging, with scenting and the cover proving to be trying at  times. Compliments to the two Spaniel judges and two Retriever judges and also to Steve Smith and his team. This is indeed a difficult job.

Over Saturday and Sunday, in a very keenly contested International  competition

Overall winners were England, closely followed by Ireland and  Wales,  and then Scotland. There was fantastic individual performances,  for Wales, Spaniel handler Nathan Quinn returning an impressive winning score of 113 out of Maximum 120, being awarded top Spaniel at the event. Likewise a fantastic performance from Drew Allan, of Scotland returning a score of 117 out of a maximum of 120, winning the top Retriever and dog overall.

The spoils were shared evenly, with Wales winning the top Spaniel team at the event, Ireland winning the top Retriever team, and yet another highlight for Wales was Rhys Carpenter’s performance in the run off for top Spaniel team.

The handlers representing Wales were as follows:

Winning Spaniel team Aled Jones, David Pither, David Gregory, Rhys Carpenter, Nathan Quinn and reserve Julie Thatcher.

Welsh Retriever team, who came a creditable third were Andrew Fisher, Nigel Probert, Mike Jones, Alan Rees, Nigel Probert and reserves Jane Middle and Wendy Glue.

A big personal thank you to CSJ K9, Ceri, Phil and the whole team for your continued support and encouragement. You were sadly missed at the event this year and hope that we will be back together as a full team at Scone Palace in September. DIOLCH YN FAWR IAWN.

One special comment from the team – the coats are a big hit, everyone loves them!!

Breaking News

Latest report from the Clwyd Retriever clubs Annual working tests

Latest report from the Clwyd Retriever clubs Annual working tests

Clwyd Retriever clubs Annual working tests held on Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th July 2021, both kindly sponsored by CSJ Canine Foods, Bodfari -www.csjk9.com or 01745 710470, who provided the winners with some wonderful goodies for their dogs.

We held our Puppy & Novice test on Saturday 17th and our Open test on Sunday 18th both held at Plas Isaf, Rhosant, Halkyn By invitation of Mrs Price & Mr Ian Jones, which we thank them for as it is wonderful ground and as always the land owners where very supportive and helpful providing water troughs around the ground to help keep the dogs cool.

Well done to all those who were in the awards and to all who competed in the tests and we hope that you all had enjoyable days out running your dogs, although the heat was a challenge over both days.

Judges

Our judges on Saturday were Alan Fryer (A), Victoria Waterfield, Gill Awty & John Benyon and on Sunday Andrew Latham (B), Victoria Waterfield, John Benyon & Kevin Jackson, Who we need to say a big thanks to as both days were extremely challenging in the heat and although we tried to provide shade for the waiting dogs and competitors the judges were out in the sun for most of the day.

Thank you

Big thank you to all the helpers and club committee members who all did an amazing job over both days whether they were throwing dummies, placing or stewarding they made the days run smoothly and for most they helped over the both days which is greatly appreciated as without them the tests just would not be able to run, I hope everyone who came to help enjoyed the days. I would like to say a special thanks to Chris Kettle who helped set up the tests with Glenys Caldwell and who organised all the helpers over the 2 days.

Tarryn kindly sent us these photos taken as a result of the show we sponsored.

The show season died with the Covid epidemic. Now with the pick up of shows after lockdown ends, our charity fun shows are due to start and CSJ have supported South Warwickshire Canine Club with some products as prizes.

These were won by our members who entered the show. Everyone had a great time and we raised money for Dementia Care. We have 4 shows booked, starting with the latest fun show on 11th July 2021.

The next shows will be held on 8th, 22nd August and 19th September 2021– our Novelty Champ Show. We try to give a goodie bag to our winners 1st to 6th. We’ve enjoyed having your products before.

Here are our principle winners from the two Open Shows you sponsored.  Our exhibitors were blown away with their prizes and I found out a lot already use your herbs… Thank you so much for your generosity, it made our two show truly memorable.

Here’s picture of Hector winning RBIS at our breed Open Show, his first show since February 2020!!  He is still on the CP24 and am trying the Salmon Oil as his coat a bit dull at the moment, will let you know how I get on.

Thank you and best wishes to all the CSJ team.

Circles of life and agility with Mark and Karen Laker in 2021

Circles of life and agility with Mark and Karen Laker in 2021

By Mark and Karen Laker

We are off on holiday for two weeks from Friday.

Then sadly Mark’s Dad passed away. Having seen how old age had transformed him so he was no longer able to feed himself, sit up etc. it takes away the edge of grief in that you feel his life was not what he had wanted. With our dogs it is our responsibility to make the decision over quality of life and Mark’s Mum felt it strongly that it seemed unfair for him to continue to deteriorate past the point that a decision would have been made.

A funeral is not great at the best of times but Covid rules made it all more confusing and exhausting. Overall though Mark’s Mum felt his Dad would have felt he’d had a good send off with enough family and friends able to attend, a choir singing his favourite hymns while a CD clip of a brass band he’d enjoyed played.

On the way back from the funeral our van started making strange noises.

One of my customers, Adele had mentioned a few months ago that she’d like to do mixi pairs but needed a small dog partner so I volunteered Pikachu. This gave me the motivation to get her back into agility and enter a show.

With the van not being safe to use and being tired from the funeral the show didn’t look a good prospect.

Adele offered me a lift so at 5:45am we fixed a crate in the back of her car and loaded up with Lucy, Oscar, Pikachu and Chic we set off.

This was my first real show back

It was great to see so many friends, the weather held up, the organisation was good and the courses were fun.

The pairs course worked well for Pikachu but not so well for Lucy. But for our first time competing together it wasn’t a bad performance.

Meanwhile I had felt out of sorts about being in grade two with my young BC. Partly because having had successive dogs winning up to champ for many years now it seems unfair on the grade two dogs to have to compete against experienced handlers and partly because I had not paid attention to this rule when it came out which meant staying in it longer than necessary. I had not appreciated that dogs needed an agility win and for her first season I only competed in jumping classes.

I totally understand that the sport is called agility and so potentially if a dog can not do all the equipment it should not progress but over the years I had enjoyed allowing my dogs to get used to the competition environment without the extra pressure that contact criteria inevitably brings. Chic was no exception. She gained confidence in 2019 resulting in two jumping wins and was going to be ready for agility courses in 2020!

Personally I did not feel joy in going to any ‘covid’ shows so here we were in 2021 still in grade two.

People talk about their old, experienced dogs as being their comfy slippers. Chic is that already or maybe the best fitting running shoes you can get. Either way as soon as I left her on the start line and turned to look at her I felt ready to attack the super course that had been set. It didn’t matter what day it was yet alone what grade – we were there to accomplish our best run. Old habits kicked in, the on/off training didn’t seem problematic and we trusted to what we had done rather than worried about what hadn’t and we went clear.

As it’s a while until our next show it means next time we compete she’ll be in grade three. I can take a few shows to find our feet, work out what we need to get better at and have fun perfecting those skills ready for next year.

I’ve recently reread Write it Down Make it Happen and some strange things have happened that I forgot I’d written down e.g. Chic winning into grade three and getting a red van – but that’s a whole other blog.

Thank you

Nero, Nala, Kai and Ted achieve success this season through a difficult year

By Chelsea-Anne Lee

Thanks again to Ceri and the team for their sponsorship over the past race season. Admittedly like most it hasn’t been as action packed as we liked. However, of the events we went to we managed the following.

  • 1st place DR4O at NATB October 2020 with Nero, Nala and Kai
  • 1st place DR4O at NATB December 2020 with Nero, Nala and Kai
  • 2nd place Checkendon Challenge Team Event with Nero and Ted
  • 3rd place Checkendon Challenge Bikejor with Nala
  • Top 5 canicrosser at the Trail Events Company Exmoor Half Marathon with Nero
  • 1st place season finisher at Newnham Bark 2 Dog Rig Series with Kai and Nala
  • 3rd place season finisher at Newnham Bark Bikejor Series with Nero

As well as some agility top 3 placings for Kai at some UKA and independent shows.

In the last couple of months we have also welcomed another new rescue to our team, a failed working Kelpie called Wally. Although no good on sheep we are hoping that he will thrive having a job competing in various dog sports with the other rescues over next season.

Many of our clients are first time owners and are very receptive to CSJ food and nutrition advice, as well as the CSJ welcome puppy packs.

Thanks again for your ongoing generosity, especially during this crazy past year.

CSJ’s treating dogs well!

Press release – 30.6.21

LYNDA WARD

pet trade SOLUTIONS

lyndaward@pettradesolutions.com     tel: 07946 743784

CSJ’s range of treats and training rewards are tops for trainers, handlers and pet owners.

Ceri Rundle says, “All our treats are natural and contain specific ingredients aimed at benefitting health“.

Poppets are a low-calorie wheat gluten free treat which include our Get Over! herbs to aid mobility and Fishcuits (made from 85% fresh wild salmon and 15% salmon meal) are extremely palatable and nutritious and great for dogs that can’t tolerate grain. For example, our crunchy Dem Bones! contain effective levels of charcoal and herbs to help clean teeth, freshen bad breath and ‘eliminate’ bad instances of gas!

Our Training Tips semi-moist 80% meat treats with cranberry and blackcurrant are air-dried for extra flavour and owners tell us their dogs go wild for them.  Whilst Pemmican Energy bars are a powerful, high energy feed block that has been specially formulated for working dogs such as gundog, agility dogs, flyballers, racing sled dogs, search and rescue dogs, as well as those in training or stressed show dogs.

Other examples are Gnaw Rolls which are delicious semi-moist 80% meat treats with seaweed and parsley so ideal for a reward while benefiting oral health, whilst Fish’n’Hips ingredients include devils claw, turmeric and oleogrape to help support the joints… they’re highly palatable and low in fat so perfect for older or overweight dogs.”

Ceri adds, “Coming from a working dog background I understand that all dogs are different and our ranges of food, herb supplements and treats are very comprehensive because they are designed to meet the real needs of dogs in differing circumstances and situations … as well as of course being very tasty!”
