World Cup Retriever International 2023

By Alan Rees

After a 3 year break, the Skinners World Cup Retriever International team event returned to the beautiful Englefield Estate. 14 teams, from all over Europe, competed over two days, every team consisting of 4 Retrievers and their handlers.

Alan Rees, having committed to judge this prestigious event for the second time, was therefore ‘unavailable’.

Nigel Probert lead the team, who were as follows – Nigel Probert, Mike Jones, David Christmas Thomas and Craig Perry. It was great to see Craig return to the competition stage after a few year’s absence.

The standard of dog work was extremely high, competing in 10 tests over the two days. This was the first time in 19 events, that 2 teams tied for First place with 685 points, resulting in an exciting run off, with the judges setting up a very long unseen retrieve.  England’s top dog, handled by team Captain, David Latham, brought his team home in 1st place. Second place went to France and 3rd place to Holland on 679 points.

Wales ended up, after a brave fight back on the second day, with 610 points and 11th place. Individual scores were Nigel and Craig on 159, Mike on 148 and David on 144.

The overall winning dog was Holland’s Cor Chrunpf’s dog, Finley, on 184 points.

Now moving on, the Wales team travel to compete at the Kennel Club’s 150 Years Celebration International.

Once again, a huge thank you to Ceri, Phil and the team at CSJ K9, for their continued support. We would not be able to compete at this level without your generosity.

Diolch yn fawr
